Electronic Shelf Labels

Beenato has set the industry standard in digital price tag quality.

What is an Electronic Shelf Label?

The English term Electronic Shelf Label , or in German “ electronic labels ” or “ e-label ” or “ ESL ” for short, refers to digital labels that can be used to display information in electronic form. This display is done via digital displays based on the E-Ink technology known from e-readers .

Electronic shelf labels are particularly well-known for price labeling in retail, such as in supermarkets or hardware stores. But ESLs are also used in industry. The electronic labels are suitable for digitizing production orders in production and are helpful in warehouse management for paperless storage location labeling .

Why Electronic Shelf Labels?

Electronic shelf labels (ESLs), provide retail stores with a range of features that improve operational efficiency, reduce pricing errors, and reduce labor costs by allowing for remote updates of entire labeling systems from centralized servers as well as many other benefits:

How do electronic shelf labels work?

Using a radio connection , the electronic labels can both retrieve the information to be displayed , e.g. from an ERP system, and display it on the screen, as well as transmit data back to the transmitter. The energy consumption of the Electronic Shelf Label remains extremely low thanks to the energy-saving E-Ink technology. The e-labels only use energy when the display is updated - and even then, the lifespan of the Electronic Shelf Label is several years with multiple updates per day. Electronic shelf labels can also have a number of other functions. For example, many electronic labels have a coloured LED integrated , which can be used to send light signals in different colours. Models with integrated and individually programmable buttons , e.g. to confirm an inventory removal or to turn a page on the e-label, are also available on the market. ESLs are flexible in terms of size: the digital labels are available from the size of a postage stamp up to tablet format.

Price labeling

ESLs are best known for their use in retail. They are used primarily as digital price labels in both small and large stores. However, retailers can decide individually what exactly should be shown on the digital E-Ink displays. It is also possible to display operating or assembly instructions. Common areas of application for electronic shelf labels include supermarkets, electronics retailers, hardware stores and pharmacies.

Digitalized production order

Electronic shelf labels have also become established in industry. In production, electronic labels are particularly well suited to digitizing production orders and accompanying documents. The connection to the ERP system or BDE (production data acquisition) creates a permanent exchange of information about the current production order with which the e-label has been linked, also known in technical jargon as “marriage”. This means that the e-label can display the most current information about the order on the screen at any time.
